Step 02. Measuring for the Right Size

Measuring Your Vanity & Mirror

Your vanity width is the anchor for everything.

Rule of thumb:
Your vanity light should be about 70–80% the width of the mirror (not the vanity itself, if the mirror is smaller).

Examples:

  1. 24" mirror → 16–19" light
  2. 30" mirror → 21–24" light
  3. 36" mirror → 25–30" light
  4. 48" mirror → 34–38" light

This keeps the fixture visually balanced without overpowering the mirror.

Height Matters

For Lights Above the Mirror

  1. Install the fixture 75–80 inches from the floor to the center of the light
  2. Leave at least 3–5 inches between the top of the mirror and the bottom of the fixture

This creates breathing room and avoids harsh glare.

For Side Sconces

  1. Mount sconces so the center sits at eye level, typically 60–65 inches from the floor
  2. Place them 2–3 inches from the edge of the mirror
  3. Keep both sides perfectly aligned for a clean, architectural look

For Pendant Lighting

Bottom of pendant: 60–65 inches from the floor
Aim for the bulb center to sit around eye level (approx. 60–62")

Final Thoughts

When in doubt, slightly wider beats slightly smaller. Undersized lighting is one of the most common bathroom mistakes, and it’s hard to unsee once installed.
And remember: great vanity lighting isn’t just functional—it sets the tone for the entire space.
