When it comes to bathroom design, vanity lighting is everything. It’s the difference between soft, flattering light and harsh shadows. Whether you're designing for a client or refreshing your own space, here’s your go-to guide for measuring and placing vanity lights properly.

Step 2. Measure for the Right Size

Start With Your Mirror

Rule of Thumb:
Your vanity light should be about 70–80% the width of the mirror, not the vanity itself, if the mirror is smaller.

Your mirror determines your light size.

Mirror to Light Examples:

24" mirror → 16–19" light

30" mirror → 21–24" light

36" mirror → 25–30" light

48" mirror → 34–38" light

This keeps the fixture visually balanced without overpowering the mirror.

Exact Measurements for Placement

For Lights Above the Mirror

Install the fixture 75–80 inches from the floor to the center of the light
Leave at least 3–5 inches between the top of the mirror and the bottom of the fixture

This creates breathing room and avoids harsh glare.

For Side Sconces

Mount sconces so the center sits at eye level, typically 60–65 inches from the floor
Place them 2–3 inches from the edge of the mirror
Keep both sides perfectly aligned for a clean, architectural look

For Pendant Lighting

Bottom of pendant: 60–65 inches from the floor
Aim for the bulb center to sit around eye level (approx. 60–62")
